riding the el + keeping warm in chicago

Friday night we had nowhere to go, it was cold and Herc had too much energy to contain him in the house.
He was like a heated molecule that was starting to jump and expand and go crazy.  In L.A. a night like that we would take a walk at the beach or just run around at the Silver Lake Reservoirs  barefoot park. (gosh I miss L.A. and it's amazing weather) John and I both grew up in the midwest so we are no strangers to the weather, but raising a kid here is very new to us.  Herc is not a kid who will sit quietly and play with his toys, he is naturally an explorer.  He wants to see how everything works, press buttons, flip switches, open doors,  pull zippers, open bags, he touches everything.  When we decided to move back to Chicago John and I promised each other that the weather wouldn't hold us back and keep us inside watching too many movies. So here we were Friday night trying to think of something to do with a almost two year old at 7p.m. just to get out of the house.  The mall was out of the question because John hates malls.  When I was a nanny I always took the kids on small adventures, we would jump on a train and go to our favorite ice cream parlor a few cities over.  Such a fun and easy thing to do. So I suggested we take the Yellow line for a short little trip.
Watching the city zoom past with Daddy.
Herc wanted to be a big boy and sit by himself.

The next day we saw our cousins who were visiting from St. Louis and went to a park in Bucktown.

It's boots and hats time!
